Why do you let our Future destroy themselves in the present??
The article Starving Themselves, Cocktail in Hand by Sarah Kershaw, is about people with eating disorders who also have drinking problems. The problem mainly affects college-aged women. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are serious disorders that affect women and men in the United States. The desire to be thin, sexy, and like the people in magazines drives these ordinary people to try and reach non-realistic forms of perfection which puts their own lives in serious danger. Drunkorexia is having regular anorexia but instead of limiting eating to low calorie foods, people who suffer from this sickness drink alcohol later in the day to make up for the calories that they had missed; they claim that the drinking helps them achieve their goals, and helps eases the pain (mental and/or physical). It’s bad enough that they aren’t eating but now they are heavily drinking. Oh yeah that’s what I really want for breakfast, a beer. If anyone has ever gotten drunk on an empty stomach, you know how the feeling; now imagine that everyday of your life. The impressions of Hollywood famous people make anorexia look okay to people as if it is a fad but its not. Young women across the nation are killing themselves, by doing this. You wouldn’t let one of your loved ones poison themselves or slit their wrists (I hope), but that is exactly what these people are doing; they are committing suicide but just really slowly. Drunkorexia is not the only problem plaguing young Americans. Manorexia is the male version of anorexia. Diabulimia is people who have diabetes and they refuse to take their insulin to have control over their weight. Not to knock these people but they need to find something constructive to do with their time and eat right. In America, Obesity is one of the main health problems and I think people who see this go the opposite way. America is so focused on being the thinnest, strongest, fastest, and the smartest it affects the behaviors of millions of Americans each day. We just can’t find middle ground because there is no middle ground it’s eat or don’t eat, drink or don’t drink; how come we can’t just eat and drink in moderation and live healthy lifestyles. Do you know how much money you could save if you just didn’t buy food to purge it up later? Judy Van De Veen, 36, spent almost eighty dollars a day in just fast food that she would purge up later that day. Can you believe that?? If you gave me eighty dollars a day it’s a wrap, it’s done. Some of these women get into the lifestyle and eventually see what they are doing to themselves and want to stop, but sometimes it is just too late. People go into rehab for this kind of stuff and sometimes they don’t even have health insurance so they have to come out of pocket and that still doesn’t guarantee that the behavior will stop. Remember back in the day when rehab was for alcoholics, crack heads and heroin users.
